Match Report for Lytchett Minster 2 Vs Puddletown 2 on 23 Feb 2008

Lytchett Minster II Move Up The League

Lytchett Minster II hosted Puddletown II at the weekend, knowing that a win would move them up the league table and into contention for promotion. The boys did not disappoint, running out 41 – 7 winners.

The first half was a strange affair, with both sides probing their opposite defences. However, when the ball was kick through by Puddletown and gathered by centre Laisiasa 'Vinny' Vinakdina, all of the Lytchetts supporters knew what to expect and Vinny did not disppoint, as he set off on one of his trade mark runs, eventually scoring in the corner. This was the only score of the half, so Lytchett were leading at half time 5 – 0.

The second half was one way traffic, with Lytchett scoring a further 6 tries. Vinney was first to add to the Lytchett total, with a delightful kick over the defence and catch to run in under the posts. Graham Lyddon converted and the score was 12- 0. Puddletown were then awarded a penalty try for persistent infringing and the conversion was made bring the travelling side back into the match 12 – 7. However, Lytchett's pack could not be contained with pick of the forwards Andy 'Tree Beard' Edwards marauding down the field to score. Graham Lyddon converted and the score had increased to 19 – 7. Next to get into the score sheet was centre Trevor Smith, when he was put into some space and applied the afterburners to out strip the covering defence to score in the corner. This pushed the score along to 24 – 7. The skipper Simon Haines is always on hand to finish a powerful forwards surge and today was no exception, when he drove the final 2 yards to the line. Simons try took the score to 29 – 7. Scrum half Mark 'Hookie' Hook commanded his forwards well and seized on an opportunity when a gap opened up in front of him to squeeze past the defending prop and passed the ball unselfishly to Graham Lyddon to score Lytchett sixth try of the day. Lyddon converted his own try and the score was 36 – 7. Lytchett had one final try when flanker Peter 'Bullet' Lloyd powered his way to the line. The final score was 41 – 7, but despite the amount of tries that were scored Puddletown played hard rugby until the final whistle and this is a testament to their team.

This win see Lytchett move up the league table into third position, but equal on points with Oakmedians, who are in second position. Lytchett Minster and Oakmedians meet in the final league game of the season and this game is sure to decide who will be promoted.
