Match Report for Lytchett Minster 2 Vs Poole on 25 Nov 2006
Lytchett Minster II Creep Up The Table
Lytchett Minster travelled the short distance to face Poole in the Dorset & Wilts 3 South league match at the weekend and in atrocious weather conditions managed to control the game to win 13 – 3.
When the referee blow the whistle to start the match the heavens opened. This did not seem to hamper both sides at first, but as the match progressed the conditions dictated the style of game and the number of mistakes made.
Lytchett were first to attack when stand-off Steve Paine broke free of the Poole defence from within his own half and made his way for the corner, but was eventually hauled down by the Poole winger. This was the first game back for Paine in over a year and he could not find the pace to complete the try scoring opportunity. However, from the resulting scrum Lytchett drove forward until scrumhalf Aaron Bellamy picked up the ball and formed a maul, this was control well and second row Rob Ansell powered over from close range. Up stepped Oz 'Never Misses' Goldchain to convert from out wide and Lytchett were leading 7 – 0.
Poole hit back straight away with a penalty of their own to narrow the gap to 7 – 3. Lytchett then took control of the game and played the remainder of the first half in the Poole twenty, but were only rewarded with 2 penalty kicks, which were converted by Oz Goldchain. The score had increased to 13 – 3 at half time. This could have been much more if it had not been for some rugged defence from the Poole team.
The weather conditions worsened in the second half and so did the standard of rugby played. Lytchett continued to try and play their expansive game, despite the wind and rain and this was not the correct tactics. With Lytchett forwards showing dominance over Poole, an eight man game should have been adopted, if they wanted to score more points, however, it was not and the game finished 13 – 3.
This league win takes Lytchett Minster II's up to a very credible 4th position in the Dorset & Wilts 3 South league and with Lytchett Minster firsts leading Hampshire Division III, times are exciting at Lytchett Minster this season.
