Lytchett Win Tense Affair


A crowd of approx. 50 people watched a fantastically tense match at Lytchett on Saturday, when top of the league Chard II’s came to Lytchett Minster. Despite turning up late, Chard were first out of the blocks and were rewarded early on then their forwards drove over from short range. The conversion was missed, but the away team were leading 5 – 0. Chard applied the pressure for much of the first 20 minutes, but were held. Lytchett were awarded a penalty and Oz Goldchain took the 3 points for the Manor Men, reducing the score to 5 - 3. Chard attacked again and only some brave defending prevented further first half scores. However, just before half time Daryl Cormack, wearing his new silver Christmas slippers, broke through the Chard defence and ran in from 40 yards to score the try. Oz Goldchain missed the conversion and at half time Lytchett were leading 8 – 5.

The second half of the match was equally as tense, but an edge had crept into the game. A player from each side was sin binned for an altercation on the floor and Glen Huxter, the Lytchett stand-off, was sent off for retaliating after being struck by his opposite number. Despite being down to 13 men, Daryl Cormack repeated his earlier break and strolled in from the half way line, this time Oz Goldchain could not miss from under the posts and Lytchett were leading 15 – 5. Chard applied the pressure once more and scored through their forwards again, reducing the score to 15 – 0. Lytchett had used all of their substitutes, when winger Colin Graddy limed off and had to play the final 10 minutes with only 13 players. Chard attacked with determination, but Lytchett met this onslaught head on and held the travelling side for a dramatic win. The match finished with unbelievable tension, but Lytchett had held on to beat the league leaders, 15 – 10.
