Match Report for Lytchett Minster 2 Vs Bridport 2 on 13 Jan 2007

Lytchett Minster II Outright Third

Lytchett Minster travelled to Bridport at the weekend and were standing in 3rd place in Dorset Division III (South). Bridport were in 5th place, but only 2 points behind the Major Men, so it was vital that Lytchett show what they were made on....and they did!

From the kick-off Lytchett laid out their credentials, when their forwards secured the ball and drove down the field. This set up excellent field position for their youthful backs to show what they could do. Stand-off Graham Liden ghosted through the Bridport defence from the 22 meter line to score the opening try. The kicking conditions were hard with the wind blowing into Oz Goldchains face and the ball was pulled well wide. Had the amazing Goldchain lost his touch? Only time would tell.

Bridport then came back into the match, while playing with the wind. However, strong defence by the Lytchett team kept them out and the half time score was 5 – 0.

It was Lytchett’s turn to play with the wind in the second half and it really made a difference. Liden kicked the ball into the corners and pinned the home team deep in their own half. From this position the Lytchett forwards took control of the game and follows 5 phases of play the ball was passed out to Liden, who went over for his second try. Oz Goldchain missed the conversion, but Lytchett were cruising at 10 – 0.

Then followed 3 tries, all along the same theme; a kick to the corner, catch, drive and try. The first try was scored by Aaron Bellamy, who scooted over from short range to score Lytchett’s third try and true to form Oz Goldchain missed the conversion. Next hooker Ian Poultney scored two tries that were nearly identical, with Poultney throwing the ball into the line-out and then controlling the back of the driving maul. The smile on Poultneys face was a picture when he got up from the ground, covered in mud, knowing that another good performance would help his fight for a first team place. Oz Goldchain missed the first shot at the posts, but miraculously kicked the second shot straight through the middle of the posts, thus increasing the Lytchett score to 27 – 0.

The last play of the game saw Bridport score a consolation try, the final score being 27 – 5.

This win promoted Lytchett Minster to outright 3rd in the league with 14 points. The 3 teams chasing Lytchett only have 10 points, so a gap is developing. Keep this form up and promotion beckons!
