Match Report for Lytchett Minster 2 Vs Blandford 2 on 29 Oct 2011
It was a poor trip up to one of the closest opponents. At least we all now know where to park and where Blandford’s changing rooms are!
So the team had only 20 minutes to warm up and prepare for the game. Sometimes short and sharp does work for some teams.
A fantastic start to the game by Lytchett, who pounced on the ball and drove all the way to the Blandford try line. After several attempts, a try was scored within the first 5 minutes. A brilliant start to the game.
Unfortunately, at the restart we let Blandford run back at us with their youthfull back line. With some stupid penalties, and lapse of concentration Blandford got themselves back into the game. The Lychett pack were quite dominant in phases, and the set pieces went well. With Gareth Williams at 10, the back line had good ball to work with. A good game by both sides was on the cards.
After a couple of quick tries by Blandford, Lytchett then started to play in the Blandford’s half. Pressure started to put on their back row, srcum & fly halves. With pressure came points. Gareth slotted over a penalty and scored a fantastic individual try. It was quite obvious that we can generate points by building pressure, but we cant wait till half way through the first half.
At half time several changes were made, so all travelling subs could be used. A good first game by Andy at No.8 showed good potential. The second half was much closer, with play again being very physical. The slope didnt help Lytchett, and seemed to give Blandford a get out of jail card. The set pieces still went well, however with the slope the scrums stared to ebb.
With several injuries during the closing phases of the game, Ltchett pulled to within a converted try of Blandford. This was a great effort by all players. If only those tries we gave away early in the first half were stopped, then this could have gone our way. Thanks to all that made the journey.
We now have 2 very hard games coming up, Dorchester 2nds (H) & Bridport 2nds (A). Let us take the positives out of the Blandford game, and bring them onto the pitch next week.
Man of the Match – Gareth Williams.
