Match Report for Lytchett Minster 1 Vs Ventnor on 22 Jan 2005
Victorious Lytchett Get First League Win
Lytchett Minster hosted Ventnor at the weekend and the large crowd were kept on tender hooks to the very last before they could celebrate the first league win of Lytchett's season.
In a very lively match, both sides attacked well and were very evenly matched. Ventnor scored first through their huge pack with a push over try, but the try went unconverted. From the restart Ventnor again went on the attack and were rewarded with a very kickable penalty, which was converted and the score was 0 - 8 to the travelling side. Lytchett responded straight away with a score of their own, when Matty Hope dived over from a rolling maul. Oz Goldchain converted the score and Lytchett were back in the match, the score being 7 - 8. Ventnor had the final score of the half, when they were lucky to get the bonce of the ball and their centre strolled over for a score. Again the conversion was missed, but the travelling side were leading at half time 7 -13.
The game changed in the second half, with Lytchett having all of the possession. But despite having a lot of good ball and field position, the manor men could not find the killer blow. However, with 10 minutes to go the break through came. The Lytchett pack had managed to apply some pressure to the Ventnor scrum and this led to their stand-off having his kick charged down and Nick Wellford gathered thwe ball to score. The score line was reduced to 12 - 13. The unflappable Oz Goldchain stepped up and converted the try, giving Lytchett the lead for the first time in the match, 14 - 13. Lytchett continued to attack until the final whistle was blown, but could not score any more points.
The close score line gave the crowd a tense afternoon, but the relief at the final whistle was there to see, as Lytchett Minster had won their first league game of the season.
