Match Report for Lytchett Minster 1 Vs Sutton Benger on 18 Oct 2008

Lytchett Progress To Next Round of the Dorset and Wilts Vase

Lytchett Minster hosted Sutton Benger in the first round of the Dorset and Wilts Vase at the weekend and following a hard fought game, ran out winners 20 - 12.

Lytchett started off the brighter of the 2 sides and were first to score when full back Junior rounded the Sutton defence to score out wide. Stand-off Harry Boulter stepped up and converted the try, giving Lytchett the best possible start and a lead of 7 – 0.

Sutton showed what they were made of then and came back with some powerful forward play and were rewarded with a try of their own, when their number 8 crashed over from short distance. The conversion was missed, so Lytchett still had a narrow lead 7 – 5.

Next Harry Boulter converted a penalty to extend Lytchett's their half time lead to 10 – 5.

Lytchett seemed to pull up their socks for the second half and started to show some invention, however, they could not break the Sutton line. Sutton took advantage of this and scored a try of their own through the backs and this time to conversion was good and gave them the lead in the match, 10 - 12.

This was the time when Lytchett needed to dig deep and stand up and be counted and the whole team certainly did. The forwards powered down field and presented the Lytchett backs with an excellent field position, which utility back and first team captain, Les Moon, took advantage of, when he powered over from 8 yards out. Up stepped Boulter to provide the extra 2 points and Lytchett were leading 17 – 12 with 10 minutes to play. Lytchett did not take their foot off the gas and continued to probe the Sutton defence and were presented with a penalty with 5 minutes to go. Boulter did the honours, extending the score to 20 – 12.

When the final whistle was blown, everybody agreed that it was a great game to watch and it was a really hard fought contest. However, the win allows Lytchett to progress into the second round to play Salisbury Exiles and that should be an interesting match.
