Lytchett Minster 10 Romsey 32

Lytchett Minster 1st XV travelled to Romsey, who are riding high in Hampshire Division II and hoping to bounce straight back up to Division 1. And despite a spirited display from the travelling side, Lytchett could not prevent the strong home team from gaining a further 2 league points, eventually losing 32 – 10.

Romsey opened the scoring early in the first half, but failed to convert their try. This seemed to spark the Lytchett forwards into life and they dominated the game for this next 35 minutes. In this time a great try was scored, when the Lytchett forwards gained a position only 15 meters out from the Romsey line and Harry Boulter darted blind scoring in the corner. The conversion was missed, but the score was tied at 5 – 5.

Romsey scored another try before half time, but Lytchett were not out of this game, with the half time score being 10 – 5 to the home side.

Lytchett’s forwards were powerful for the whole match, but the Romsey backs could not be contained, scoring a try 10 minutes into the second half. Lytchett did rally, with some strong driving forward play and were rewarded when Graham ‘Dancer’ Hynd scored from 5 yards. The score line had been reduced to 15 – 10 and with 20 minutes to go the game was nicely poised. However, Romsey showed class in the final quarter and ran in a further 3 tries, with one being converted. The final score being 32 – 10 to the home side.

Despite the 6 tries being scored against them, Lytchett can really take some positive points from the game; their forwards were by far the better pack on the day and the team did not stop tackling until the final whistle. Hopefully, better results will follow.
