Match Report for Lytchett Minster 1 Vs Oakmeadians 2 on 15 Dec 2007

Lytchett Hold On For Victory Over Oaks

Lytchett Minster hosted a second team from Oakmedians at the weekend. Despite the extremely bitterly cold weather, a fair sized crowd witnessed a cracking match, with both teams playing attacking rugby from the start to the finish. However, the manor men eventually triumphed, 21 – 19.

Both of these two teams showed great invention and attacked from deep. However, at the start of this match it was the Lytchett forwards who took command and battered their way up the field and eventually found their way into the Oaks 22. Following some good interchanging between backs and forwards, prop Matt Deary found some space and glided through a gap to score under the posts. Stand-off Moodie converted and Lytchett had a lead, 7 – 0.

Lytchett continued to attack and when Moodie broke through from stand-off on the Lytchett 22 there was a long way to go. However, the sprightly stand-off was only brought down on the opposition 10 meter line and his amazing pop pass to the rampaging flanker Graham 'Forrest' Oliver beat final the defence. Forrest strode in from 40 yards to score under the posts. Inside centre Harry Boulter converted and increase the score to 14 – 0.

Oaks were not going to lie down and die and mounted attack after attack of their own and were eventually rewarded when their overlap saw their wing dive into the corner. The try was converted and the half time score was 14 – 7.

Oaks were first to score after the break when their exciting backs again found some space with their open side flanker scoring. The score was reduced to 14 – 12 and everybody knew that his match was going to go down to the wire.

Lytchett steadied their ship and used their powerful forwards to regain control and were rewarded with a push over try with Daz Millen coming up with the ball. Boulter converted to stretch the lead to 21 – 12.

Oaks continued to attack until the end and managed another score of their own with 5 minutes to go, when their centre danced past 2 Lytchett tacklers to score. The try was converted to make the score 21 – 19 and the game was poised for a great finish.

Lytchett managed to hold out for the victory, but they were pushed all the way by a spirited Oaks team.

On an extremely cold day, it warms your heart to see rugby like this........a great thanks to everybody who took part!!!
