Match Report for Lytchett Minster 1 Vs Kingsclere on 27 Jan 2007

Lytchett Minster Set To Grab Top Spot

Lytchett Minster travelled to Kingsclere at the weekend, knowing that Kingsclere had beaten top of the league Ventnor the week before. A win for Lytchett would allow them to grab top point in the league, if they could also win their game in hand in the few weeks time against bottom of the league Stoneham.

Despite the Kingsclere team having home advantage and being physically larger, Lytchett Minster showed why they are fighting for promotion, bravely winning 10 – 0.

Kingsclere were on top for the majority of the first half and constantly attacked. However, Lytchett showed deep resolved and held out the home team and were rewarded on the half hour with a try from Stand-off Harry Boulter. Boulter, leading the extremely youth Lytchett back line, danced through the Kingsclere defence to score from the 22 meter line. Boulter failed to convert his own try, but Lytchett were leading at half time 5 – 0.

Lytchett showed great resolve again in the second half to thwart the Kingsclere advances. A superb individual try from open side flanker Shaun Greenpost clinched the match for Lytchett when he caught a ball kicked through and started his run from the Lytchett 10 meter line. Despite the Kingsclere attempts to stop him, Greenpost powered through 6 tackles to score the winning try out wide. Boulter failed with his attempt to convert, but the damage had been done and Lytchett desired their win, 10 – 0.

Coach Steve Mathews said "A lost today would have allowed Kingsclere back into the fight for league promotion, but we have put their promotion hopes on hold for another year. Lytchett Minster are now nicely poised to take the top spot from Ventnor after our next league match against Stoneham."
