Lytchett Minster Keep It Alive
Lytchett Minster hosted Ivel Barbarians II in a friendly match at the weekend, but despite the friendly tag the match was very competitive. However, Lytchett Minster controlled the game throughout and run out victorious 31 – 0.
The kick off saw both teams weighting up each other, with neither team really dominating. In fact for the first 25 minutes Ivel looked the more likely team to score, coming close on 2 occasions. However, Lytchett were the first team to score when standoff Harry Boulter chipped over the Ivel defence and winger Gary Fooks gathered the ball to score in the corner. Boulter converted from out wide and Lytchett were in the lead at half time 7 - 0.
Lytchett took control of the second half and played some exciting rugby. The ball was not taken to ground, but constantly kept alive, moving the ball away from the contact situation and offering the Lytchett backs room to run. A good example of this was following 3 phases of play when standoff Boulter broke free of the Ivel defence on the half way line. Boulter stood up the fall back and passed to winger Fooks to score his second try of the match. Boulter again converted the try and Lytchett were in a commanding position 14 – 0. Lytchett continued to apply pressure and soon had scored another try when prop Peter ‘Bullet’ Lloyd charged down the Ivel standoff and gathered the ball to score. Boulter again converted the try and Lytchett were ahead 21 – 0.
Flanker Tom Boulter allowed his brother Harry to score a try of his own when he powered from the base of a scrum and off loaded. Boulter junior only had to make the line to score Lytchetts forth try of the afternoon. Harry hit the upright, thus missing converting his own try, but had pushed the score up to 26 – 0. The fifth and final try for Lytchett was scored by hooker Gwillym Poole, when to was passed the ball on the Ivel 10 meter line, he pinned his ears back to beat the covering defence. Boulter failed to convert, but had notched up 11 points of his own in a 5 try haul for the Manor Men. Final score Lytchett Minster 31 Ivel Barbarians 0.
