Match Report for Lytchett Minster 1 Vs Isle Of Wight on 03 Nov 2007

Lytchett Narrowly Lose against Isle of Wight

Lytchett Minster Senior 1st XV hosted the men from the Island at the weekend and were pipped at the post, narrowly losing 18 – 21 to the Isle of Wight.

In an incredible game both sides played their part. The half time score was 0 – 0, but the game was hardly dull. The Isle of Wight were straight out the blocks and camped in the Lytchett half for 20 minutes, before Lytchett realised that they could play rugby and started to attack from deep.

The game opened up in the second half and both sides started to score. First it was the Isle of Wight to score a converted try following a silly intercepted pass from the Lytchett stand-off Glen Huxter. Lytchett replied with 2 penalties of their own from the boot of Harry Boulter and the score after 55 minutes was 6 – 7. Lytchett applied the greater pressure at this point and were rewarded with a try when the forwards drove for the line, leaving Harry Boulter to finish off the move. The conversion was missed, but Lytchett were in the lead 11 – 7.

At this point Lytchett were cruising to only their second league victory of the season, when disaster struck, when Boulter had a kick charged down and the Isle of Wight flanker scored under the posted. The score was 11 – 14 and it was end on.

The Isle of Wight could feel the victory was close and forged on to score another late try in the corner, increasing the score line to 11 – 21. Despite their only being 5 minutes to go, Lytchett Minster did not give up and rampaged up the field and were awarded a penalty try which Boulter converted, reducing the score to 18 – 21. The final few minutes were tense, but the Isle of Wight hung on for a desired away victory.

If not for the 2 gifted tries, Lytchett Minster could have won this game. They will need to tighten up on the silly mistakes if they are going to survive in this league.
