Match Report for Lytchett Minster 1 Vs Eastleigh on 25 Sep 2004
Lytchett Lose Opener
Lytchett Minster entertained Eastleigh at the weekend, but despite being on a par with the Hampshire side, three lapses in concentration saw the home team lose their opening league match of the year 5 - 15.
Pretty much from the kick-off Eastleigh showed their intensions, by throwing the ball wide to stretch the Lytchett defence and they were rewarded when their winger was put in space and rounded the covering defender to score. The try was not converted.
Both teams showed glimpses of inspiration. However, good defensive work by both team made for an even contest, until Eastleigh scored a break away try very late in the first half. Again the try was not converted and the half time score was 10 - 0 to the visitors.
The start of the second half saw Eastleigh attacking again and their forward pack rumbled forward to score. The try was not converted. This seemed to spark the Lytchett team into life. Their forwards laid down a good platform to enable their stand-off Adam Deary to kick his way up the field and into the opponents 22. From the resulting line out, the ball was kicked across field, but did not make the safety of he touch line. The ball was gathered by Jules Andrews, who danced around 2 defenders and stepped inside to feed the ball onto the rampaging Lytchett number 8 Graham 'Stroke' Oliver. Oliver had enough momentum to make the Eastleigh line and the try was scored. The try was not converted, but Lytchett had reduced the score line to 5 - 15. Lytchett continued to attack the Eastleigh line, but there was no more points scored in the match and Eastleigh recorded their first victory of the league season winning 15 - 5.
The Lytchett coach, Steve Mathews said 'Considering the side that played today is nearly completely new, the performance was acceptable. We have a lot to work on, so training will be vitally important in the next couple of months.'.
