Match Report for Lytchett Minster 1 Vs East Dorset on 02 Sep 2006
Lytchett Show Passion
Whatever was lacking in the Lytchett Minster performances last term was certainly on display at East Dorset in the opening game of the season. Lytchett Minster, skippered by Rob Ansell, showed desire, commitment and passion to rack up 6 unanswered tries in a fine display of running rugby.
Dynamic hooker Gwillym Poole opened the scoring for the travelling side 20 minutes into the game, when he scored from short range, following persistent pressure from the Lytchett forwards. More was to come from the hooker, when he powered through a number of East Dorset defenders to score his and Lytchett’s second try of the match. Next it was the turn of Lytchett’s blind side flanker Graham ‘Forrest’ Oliver who dived over a ruck to score. Harry Boulter, playing stand-off, had trouble converting the first half tries, due to the extremely windy conditions and the score at half time was 15 – 0.
A further 3 tries were scored in the second half, all starting in the Lytchett half. Firstly, Graham Oliver set off on a run, following an East Dorset penalty. After beating a couple of tacklers he off loaded to Gwillym Poole, who marauded up the field and passed to Rob Ansell who returned the ball to Graham Oliver, who passed the ball out wide to Lytchett’s Lithuanian winger Nerijus ‘Red’ Baltrusis, who beat his marker on the outside to score in the corner. Secondly, Harry Boulter showed a touch of class when he followed up a high kick and managed to gather the ball, despite being surrounded by East Dorset players. A side step later and Harry had scored his first try for the first team. Although he scored the try Boulter passed the ball over for Scott Ricketts to have a punt at the conversion from out wide and Ricketts was successful in added the 2 points. The final try was scored by Nick ‘Shaggy’ Read when, from the inside centre position, the prop smashed his way up the field and found himself in space. Despite his size, Read showed amazing pace and went in from 50 yards. The final score was 32 – 0 to Lytchett Minster.
Lytchett stalwart Daryl Cormack commented following the match ‘The atmosphere at training in the last couple of weeks has been great and this win has certainly done a lot for the lads’ confidence. Let’s hope we can keep this intensity up and get promoted this year.’
